Forced marriage in Benin: Inf reminds of penalties faced by perpetrators

In a video released on July 7, 2026, Huguette Bokpè Gnacadja, president of the National Institute for Women (Inf), reminded of the penalties under Beninese law against forced marriage. Two forms are punishable: marriage imposed on a girl under 18 and marriage imposed on an adult woman against her will. Perpetrators face 10 to 20 years of criminal imprisonment and a fine of 500,000 to 2,000,000 CFA francs, with no exemption for family members. Inf commits to pursuing any case brought to its attention.
