Kenyan preacher sentenced to 200 years in prison over murders of 191 people

Self-proclaimed preacher Paul Mackenzie was sentenced Friday to 200 years in prison for the murder of 191 people, including 190 children, in the Shakahola Forest cult near Malindi. The court imposed 100 years for homicide and 100 years for charges related to the starvation of followers, whom he allegedly urged to fast to “meet Jesus”; his 28 co-accused also received lengthy sentences. C. T. Sonko, a 27-year-old restaurateur from Zac-Mbao, and M. Fall, a 22-year-old tailor from Médina-Gounass, have been remanded in custody after an altercation in Sam-Notaire, where they had arranged to meet through Snapchat on November 2. A. L. Mbaye says he found an envelope containing 14 condoms, pills and lubricant in Sonko’s bag. Sonko acknowledges the case concerns an accusation of homosexuality but denies engaging in such acts; both men are due before the Pikine-Guédiawaye flagrante delicto court on Monday.
