FR-Alert: Nuclear emergency drill will trigger phone alerts in Gironde on November 12

Residents within 20 kilometres of the Blayais nuclear power plant in Gironde will receive an FR-Alert message on Thursday, November 12, 2026, as part of a national nuclear safety drill continuing the following day. The exercise will involve 80 municipalities in Gironde and Charente-Maritime, which will activate their local emergency plans. The prefecture says the alert is for educational purposes, is based on a fictional scenario and requires no action from residents; it will also be relayed on A10 motorway signs and radio station 107.7. Held every five years under France’s Internal Security Code, the drill will test the plant’s emergency response plan and raise public awareness of protective measures.

Action pour les droits de l'homme (ADH), an NGO based in Beni territory, has warned that the roughly 80-kilometre Mbau-Kamango-Nobili road is severely deteriorated and several bridges are in poor condition, with some dating back to the colonial era. ADH coordinator David Muwaze reported growing mud pits and ravines, and raised concerns about bridges over the Butakila, Semuliki, Makoyoba, Abyalose and Mamundioma rivers. The organization urged the road maintenance contractor and provincial authorities to take urgent steps to maintain the route and rehabilitate the most damaged structures. The contractor blamed delays on insecurity linked to ADF attacks but said machinery is already on site to continue maintenance and rehabilitation work.
