France has received a request from Vanuatu regarding the sovereignty of Matthew and Hunter islands, as well as the maritime boundary delimitation between the two countries. The International Court of Justice has confirmed receipt of the request, but the procedure can only proceed if France accepts the Court's jurisdiction. This dispute, which dates back to before Vanuatu's independence in 1980, has been exacerbated by the failure of recent bilateral negotiations.
