France: Facing rioters, Macron rejects the government’s first resignation

The day after a weekend of violence, Laurent Nuñez offered his resignation to Emmanuel Macron, who rejected it to ensure continuity in the command of law enforcement. Macron asked the minister to investigate failures in anticipation and intelligence and to develop new ways to tackle rioters. Nuñez acknowledged that police had lost control in some cities, while Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin admitted that the authorities had failed and cited inadequate intelligence. Authorities reported more than 2,400 arrests and nearly 1,000 law-enforcement officers injured; as many as 30,000 looters were recorded in Marseille on Saturday.
