Free electricity allocation could rise to 300kWh under proposed policy

South African Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said the government is considering raising the monthly Free Basic Electricity allocation from 50kWh to between 200kWh and 300kWh per qualifying household. The number of beneficiaries will depend on the final identification and registration of eligible households and on funding and implementation arrangements. Of about 2.8 million identified indigent households, only 1.7 million have benefited from free basic electricity.

Kitoko said opposition members were attacked in Kinshasa on September 15 and accused Augustin Kabuya and his supporters of using the justice system against Epenge while the alleged attackers remain free. He said the ECiDé rejects armed struggle but warned that repression is closing off peaceful avenues of expression.

Livestock Development Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha urged industry stakeholders to use the ministry’s programmes and cited poor veterinary services and limited access to pasture and water among the sector’s challenges. He said seven veterinary hospitals had been completed and equipped through a World Bank-supported programme.
