Fresh Gas Emissions Hit Ogun Schools, Sending Hundreds of Students to Hospital

A fresh outbreak of foul-smelling gas affected secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo and Ago-Iwoye in Ogun State on Wednesday, sending several students to hospital. Anglican Girls Grammar School and Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School were affected, while some schools in Ago-Iwoye closed and sent students home. Ogun State Environmental Agency General Manager Kehinde Bello said the incident was caused by underground emissions linked to geological and tectonic fault lines, not sabotage or a pipeline leak. He advised people exposed to the odour to cover their noses and mouths with a wet handkerchief; it was the fourth occurrence this year, following incidents dating back to April.
