Fresh Oil Spill Disrupts Fishing in Bayelsa Community

A crude oil spill polluted the shoreline of Egweama on Cape Formosa Island in Bayelsa State on Sunday, November 1, 2026, disrupting fishing and leaving residents unable to go to sea. Residents, including Ebimiete David, collected oil in containers until around 3 a.m., while some fishing nets were contaminated and damaged. Community Development Committee chairman Tonye Yemoleigha called for urgent intervention, cleanup, medical care and relief supplies; the spill’s source remains unconfirmed, although unverified community reports point to Aiteo Oil Company’s activities. ECARD described the incident as another “mystery spill” whose source has not been identified.

In Kolwezi, 27 residents, including eight children, are suing mining company COMMUS, the Congolese state and the Congolese Environment Agency over harm they attribute to mining pollution. At the first hearing on November 3 at the Kolwezi Commercial Court, proceedings focused on procedural issues, and the merits have yet to be examined. The plaintiffs say a nearby stream was polluted, blocked and diverted, leading to the loss of fish and skin problems, and they allege they were denied access to the mine’s environmental and social impact assessment. They also accuse authorities of failing to adequately monitor COMMUS, which is controlled by Zijin Mining, and enforce environmental laws.
