Irish European Athletics Champion Ciara Mageean Dies Aged 34

Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean has died aged 34 from cancer, surrounded by loved ones, her family announced. She revealed her bowel cancer diagnosis in July 2025 and later said the disease was at an advanced stage. From Portaferry in Northern Ireland, Mageean represented the Republic of Ireland at three Olympic Games and won the 1,500 metres at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome. An Achilles tendon injury kept her from competing at the Paris Olympics.
