Saudi Arabia executed Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, two Bangladeshi nationals, on October 14, 2026, after they were convicted of an act described as indecent in a mosque in Mecca. Following their arrest and an investigation, a court sentenced them to death under ta’zir, citing the seriousness of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of the place and time. Judicial authorities upheld the verdict, and a royal order authorized the executions. The Interior Ministry reiterated that acts violating the sanctity of mosques would be punished under sharia.
