Gambia: 5.6% Growth, but a Quarter of Households Food Insecure

In 2024, Gambia's real GDP grew by 5.6%, with an average growth of 5.7% between 2022 and 2024, and forecasts of 5.9% in 2025. Despite this economic progress, about 24% of households face food insecurity, especially 52% in rural areas. Inflation decreased to 11.7%, but remains high, and public debt reached 81% of GDP, exceeding ECOWAS average. Dependence on food imports, particularly rice, contributes to ongoing hunger despite economic growth.
