Gentle giant Backpack wins Alaska’s Fat Bear Week

After a week of fierce competition, Backpack, a brown bear known for his pacifist nature, was crowned Fat Bear Week champion at Katmai National Park in Alaska. The event, in its 12th year, featured 16 bears competing in a single-elimination tournament with online voting, receiving over 100,000 votes. Backpack, also known as Bear 89, narrowly won with just over 50% of the vote, defeating Bear 910. The contest highlights the bears' ability to fatten up on salmon to survive the winter.
