Ghanaian twin brothers and US woman plead guilty to $9m romance scam

Ghanaian twin brothers Jamal and Kamal Abubakari, both 22, and 53-year-old Hawaiian resident Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie pleaded guilty to participating in an international romance-scam network. From July 2024 to April 2026, the group used fake identities on dating sites and social media to defraud elderly people of $9m across the US, Germany and Austria. Victims were located in 25 US states, including Ohio, where the charges were brought. The defendants face up to 20 years in prison and will be sentenced next year; they also agreed to forfeit jewellery seized after their arrests.
