Coral reefs are experiencing bleaching events so frequently that they no longer have time to recover. The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network reported that global coral cover is now well below normal levels and at risk of irreversible decline. The latest bleaching event in 2023 impacted 77 percent of the world's coral reef areas, and another such event is very likely this year due to elevated temperatures.
