According to the first report on the Global Capitalism Index published by an American university in Virginia, Mauritius ranks 48th worldwide with a score of 73.9 points, making it the top-ranked African country. The index assesses eight aspects of capitalist systems, including banking, financial market sophistication, free movement of goods and capital, and ease of starting a business, along with institutional and political criteria such as contract enforcement, anti-corruption measures, political freedom, rule of law, and property rights. Seychelles follows closely with 73.4 points, then Botswana with 72.7 points, while several African countries like the DRC, Libya, Djibouti, Sudan, and the Central African Republic are poorly ranked or lack sufficient data.
