Google has applied to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to release 32 million sterilized male mosquitoes in California and Florida to reduce the risk of dengue and other diseases transmitted by Aedes aegypti. The mosquitoes carry Wolbachia bacteria, which blocks reproduction by preventing egg development after mating. A similar experiment in Singapore led to an 80-90% decline in mosquito populations and a more than 70% reduction in dengue cases.
