Government moves to hold departments accountable for municipal debt

Co-operative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa announced that a proposal will be submitted to Cabinet to withhold funding from national and provincial departments that fail to pay municipalities. In July, the National Treasury withheld allocations to 69 municipalities for non-compliance with financial governance regulations. Hlabisa emphasized that departments have constitutional and statutory obligations to settle municipal property rates and service accounts.
