Grant's Valuable Lesson

Ulysses S. Grant began his Civil War service as colonel of the 21st Illinois Infantry. In July 1861, he was ordered to advance against Confederates in Florida, Missouri. After several changes in destination and delays, he was ultimately ordered to rescue an Illinois regiment surrounded by rebels. Grant also noted the significance of his son, Frederick, accompanying him as he left for battle.
