Greece’s parliament passed a law banning social media use by people under 15, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s ruling New Democracy party using its majority to secure approval. The law takes effect on January 1, 2027, requires age verification and imposes harsh penalties on companies that fail to comply. Opposition socialist party PASOK abstained after proposing a ban for under-13s and parental controls for 13- and 14-year-olds. Greece joins about 20 countries that have introduced or are planning restrictions, amid questions about enforcement and effectiveness.
