Guinea-Bissau freezes relations with Cape Verde

The transitional authorities in Guinea-Bissau have announced a freeze on relations with Cape Verde. The decision follows Cape Verde's request for the swift release of Domingos Simões Pereira, the opposition leader detained since July 10 for his alleged role in a coup attempt in October 2025. Bissau considers the request as interference in its internal affairs and a violation of its sovereignty. The ruling military also accuses Cape Verde of serving European interests at the expense of the regional agenda.
