Voters in Guinea-Bissau have approved a new constitution that significantly expands presidential powers, allowing the president to appoint and dismiss the prime minister and cabinet, as well as dissolve parliament in the event of a grave political crisis. Turnout in the referendum was reported at nearly 60%, with 70% of voters supporting the changes. The new constitution also reduces the number of parliamentary seats from 102 to 65 and introduces new eligibility requirements for presidential candidates.
