Gunfire, as Niger insurgents attempt to storm presidential palace

Niger's presidential guard repelled insurgents from within the armed forces who attempted to enter the presidential palace in Niamey on Saturday, where gunfire was ongoing. Heavy gunfire was heard in several neighborhoods of the capital, particularly near the presidential palace and in the airport area where a major military base is located. The state television signal was cut for just over an hour before being restored at around 10:00 am (0900 GMT).
