High Blood Pressure now hits young people in Africa

Prof. Lebo Gafane-Matemane from North-West University in South Africa warned that hypertension is no longer only a concern for older people, but is now affecting younger Africans, increasing the risk of kidney disease and heart complications. In her inaugural lecture, she emphasized the need to shift from treatment to prevention and invest in early screening and precision medicine. Her research shows that many Africans have low-renin forms of hypertension that respond differently to standard treatments. She calls for research and treatment strategies tailored to African populations.
