Hill-Lewis, McKenzie trade accusations over guns and gang violence in Cape Town
Democratic Alliance leader Geordin Hill-Lewis and Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie have clashed over illegal firearms, gang violence and Cape Town’s crime-fighting operations ahead of local government elections. Hill-Lewis posted images of McKenzie, Julius Malema and Fadiel Adams with firearms, saying his party was working to remove illegal guns from the streets. McKenzie, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, accused Hill-Lewis of failing to confront gangs on the Cape Flats and alleged that City tenders had benefited gangsters. The dispute has also drawn in Cape Town’s SWAT team, its ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system and rival claims about who is doing more to fight crime.
