Horror of South Africa’s mass killings as toll reaches 196

In a single day, two separate attacks in South Africa resulted in 27 deaths. Sixteen people were killed at a tavern near Carletonville, 70 km west of Johannesburg, on Saturday night, while 10 others were shot dead at an entertainment venue near Cape Town hours later. Overall, at least 196 people have been killed in 41 mass killings across South Africa in 2026, according to the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime (GI-TOC).
