House of Representatives Seeks to Halt Fee Hikes and Probe 100% Increases

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has urged the federal government to suspend recent fee increases at public tertiary institutions. It tasked relevant committees with investigating increases reportedly exceeding 100% at some universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, following a motion by lawmaker Ifeoluwa Ehindero. Lawmakers warned that the hikes, introduced without adequate consultation, could undermine the NELFUND student loan scheme and disadvantage students from low-income families. The House also called for increased government funding for institutions and a review of tuition charges in light of current economic conditions.
