How and why the UN General Assembly is gaining prominence

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, widespread criticism was voiced regarding the organization's failures, including the inability to sanction Israel, limited response to US-led bombing of Iran, and ineffective handling of Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The Security Council's veto system, held by five permanent members, has prevented meaningful intervention since the Cold War's end. Despite these constraints, the General Assembly, with its 193 member states, is increasing in prominence as a forum where politics does not always override policy, especially as global power dynamics shift and middle and small powers gain influence.
