How grid leasing could help offset Kenya Power monopoly loss

Kenya Power is expected to offset losses from the end of its monopoly by leasing its electricity transmission infrastructure, according to analysts at Standard Investment Bank. The utility would transform into a grid landlord, charging wheeling fees to private producers. KenGen has already applied for a transmission and distribution license for its Olkaria Green Energy Park SEZ, while Centum seeks to wheel power from its Akira geothermal plant to its Vipingo SEZ. The 2026 Electricity Market Regulations aim to create a competitive multi-supplier electricity market in Kenya.
