How my trusted security aide contributed to overthrow me — Gowon

Former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon, stated that his trusted security aide, Joseph Garba, contributed to his overthrow in the July 1975 coup. In his autobiography, Gowon described the event as a deep personal betrayal, as he had placed his trust in Garba, who had sworn he had no knowledge of any plot against his government. Gowon also mentioned that his Chief Security Officer warned him of an imminent coup, identifying Garba and Anthony Ochefu as key figures involved.
