Switzerland's glaciers have lost nearly 20 percent of their ice in just five years due to a combination of snow deficits in winters and record-high temperatures this summer. A report from the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (GLAMOS) states a 5.5 percent ice volume loss over the hydrological year ending September 2026. In September, GLAMOS researchers observed a three-meter ice loss on a glacier at nearly 3,000 meters elevation, highlighting the detrimental effects of extreme summer conditions on small Alpine glaciers.
