Two powerful storms are hitting opposite sides of the Pacific this week: Hurricane Polo has struck Mexico’s southwestern coast, while Nolo has become a hurricane approaching Hawaii. Nolo, which became a hurricane Thursday night, is expected to strengthen further as it heads toward the Big Island, with rainfall forecasts of 15 to 30 inches and higher possible. Hawaii has experienced significant flooding, an earthquake, and two other hurricanes this year, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency and activate over 230 National Guard members. Hawaiian Electric is preparing crews to respond to Nolo after previously working on power restoration following Hurricane Lowell.
