Salva Kiir: South Sudan president dissolves government ahead of country's first elections

South Sudan President Salva Kiir has dissolved the transitional government three months before the country's first national elections since independence in 2011. He removed the five vice-presidents and dissolved parliament, as well as national and state governments. Kiir, who is seeking re-election, has kept Riek Machar, the main opposition leader and former vice-president, under house arrest after sacking him last year.
