Illicit diesel-paraffin blending could affect up to 800 million litres a year

Illicit blending of diesel with illuminating paraffin could account for up to 7% of South Africa’s diesel market, or about 800 million liters annually, according to industry research cited by the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (FIASA). This adulteration could lead to tax losses between R3.6 billion and R4.2 billion per year, with the illegal market valued at R15.3 billion. FIASA describes diesel adulteration as one of the most significant illicit trade challenges facing South Africa’s fuel industry, especially as diesel prices are expected to rise sharply in October.
