Imo Postpones Local Government Election Indefinitely

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has postponed indefinitely the local government election scheduled for November 7, 2026. Chairman Chief Charles Ejiogu announced the decision at a stakeholders meeting in Owerri on Saturday but gave no specific reason, saying a new date, timetable and guidelines would be announced as soon as possible. The poll was originally scheduled for September 26 but was delayed because of litigation. Ejiogu pledged a level playing field for political parties and said the commission was working with security agencies on election safety.

During the tour, Charles has spoken of past suffering in the Bahamas and visited a site in Guyana associated with a slave rebellion.

Ortom said Tarzoor misrepresented his remarks about Governor Hyacinth Alia and questioned his record as Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly and as Nigeria’s ambassador to Namibia. Defending his own administration, Ortom cited the 2017 law prohibiting open grazing, the establishment of the Benue State Livestock Guards and support for Community Volunteer Guards. He also pointed to attacks on farming communities and began listing his education achievements, including more than 1,000 primary schools.
