Indian firm building $15bn Trump-announced steel mill has deep Russia ties

US President Donald Trump announced a $15 billion steel megaplant in Ohio, with Indian businessman Ravi Ruia, cofounder of Essar Group, standing behind him during the announcement. Essar owns Mesabi Metallics, which is building what is expected to be the largest steel mill in the US. The Ruia family has historical ties to Russia, with Shashi Ruia having signed an agreement with Vladimir Putin in 2016, and Essar being connected to Nayara Energy, majority-owned by Russian gas giant Rosneft under Western sanctions.
