Italy approves sweeping security measures in response to protests

Italy’s government approved sending 500 troops to Milan and introducing tougher penalties after cost-of-living protests turned violent in northern cities. Under the new measures, participants in groups of at least five who endanger public safety could face up to five years in prison and a €20,000 fine, while parents may be held financially liable for vandalism committed by their children. Police will also be able to detain 14-to-17-year-olds deemed dangerous even if they have not committed a crime. The cabinet did not grant soldiers policing powers after President Sergio Mattarella opposed the move; Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said destruction and theft were crimes, not protest.
