Raw sewage is spilling onto the former football pitch at the Football for Hope Centre in Harare, Khayelitsha, while a blocked drain causes a heavy stench. Created as a legacy project linked to the 2010 FIFA World Cup to provide a safe space for young people, the centre is now dilapidated. Grassroot Soccer South Africa handed the facility to the City of Cape Town around 2022, when the five-a-side pitch was already damaged by sewage. Community leader Yanga Mjingwana is calling for a permanent solution or daily sewage drainage by the city.
