Jailed PKK founder Ocalan moved to new section of Turkish island prison

Turkiye has transferred Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed founder of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), to a new section of the Imrali island prison, where he has been held for 27 years. Mithat Sancar, a member of the DEM Party delegation that regularly visits him, said the move should accelerate the peace process, which has been paused for two months. Fellow DEM politician Pervin Buldan confirmed that Ocalan had announced the transfer but stressed that the new facility remained part of the prison. Founded in 1978, the PKK is designated a “terrorist” organisation by Turkiye, the United States and the European Union.
