According to Jeune Afrique, the General Directorate of External Research (DGRE) has been weakened by internal rivalries related to President Paul Biya. A significant episode dates back to November 2021, when a secret conversation between Colonel Émile Joël Bamkoui and a whistleblower leaked, revealing tensions within the intelligence services. Hervé Parfait Mbapou, involved in extortion cases, was also at the center of these rivalries, highlighting the growing involvement of intelligence in power struggles surrounding the head of state.
