JKUAT, UoN, Egerton Among Hardest Hit as Govt Slashes University Funding by Ksh 13B

The government has cut funding to public universities by Ksh 13 billion, significantly impacting the University of Nairobi, JKUAT, and Egerton University. For instance, funding for the University of Nairobi dropped from Ksh 2.44 billion in 2023/2024 to Ksh 534.79 million in 2025/2026. Other institutions like Kenyatta University and Moi University also experienced steep reductions. Despite this decline, some universities, such as Masinde Muliro University, saw an increase in the number of government-sponsored students.
