Joburg's power cuts: Government departments face the consequences of R1.3bn debt

The City of Johannesburg has escalated its battle against mounting debt by cutting electricity to government departments that have failed to pay municipal bills, with total arrears exceeding R1.3 billion. The disconnections, led by Mayor Dada Morero, signify a shift in enforcement, treating government entities the same as ordinary residents and businesses regarding non-payment. City Power is owed nearly R754 million by government departments, while Johannesburg Water is owed over R600 million.
