June 12 annulment unjustified, painful — Akume, Onanuga

George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, described the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by Moshood Abiola as unjustified and painful. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Democracy Day, he said the annulment disrupted political development and complicated power rotation between North and South. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga added that the military authorities never gave a clear explanation and that Abiola was the clear winner.
