June 12: MKO Abiola refused to sell presidential mandate to Abacha - Oshiomhole

Senator Adams Oshiomhole stated that the late MKO Abiola refused to sell his presidential mandate to former military head of state Sani Abacha. Oshiomhole was part of a group from the Nigeria Labour Congress that met Abacha in Abuja after the June 12 election was canceled. He reported that Abacha was ready to tolerate many things but not Abiola proclaiming himself president. Abiola stood firm, refusing to give up the mandate entrusted to him by the Nigerian people. Oshiomhole also noted that President Bola Tinubu is committed to speeding up constitutional amendments to create state police forces.
