Mwenga: new influx of internally displaced persons after clashes in Itombwe

Massive population displacements have been recorded over several days in the villages of Kashongo, Magunda, Msongyo, and Maheta following clashes between the AFC/M23 coalition, supported by Red Tabara and Twirwaheno, and the FARDC/Wazalendo from September 24 to 27, 2026. The security situation has worsened, leading to movements towards Masango, Kigoma, and forested areas of Itombwe, with disruptions caused by illegal barriers, forced extortion, looting, and violence. Many residents, including women, children, youth, and the elderly, are without adequate shelter and face shortages of food and water, while schools and health facilities are closed or damaged, and agricultural activities are heavily impacted.
