The eco-guards of Kahuzi-Biega National Park returned to the Itebero sector on September 16 after more than a year of absence. Their relocation in February 2025 was due to security instability caused by factions of the Raïa Mutomboki militia. The return of the eco-guards, supported by local authorities, will allow for a resumption of conservation activities, although security conditions remain concerning. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, had closed to the public since February 2025 due to the takeover of Bukavu by the AFC/M23.
