One person killed in suspected ‘Islamophobic’ shooting near Paris

A gunman killed one person and wounded five others, including a 12-year-old girl, in attacks in Trappes and nearby La Verrière in the Paris suburbs. The 39-year-old suspect was arrested shortly afterward; the attacks reportedly targeted a playground, a fuel station and a medical centre. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said investigators were examining whether the shootings were racially or religiously motivated, while Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh described them as a terrorist attack with likely Islamophobic overtones. France’s national antiterrorism prosecutors took over the case, and authorities planned to deploy 70,000 officers to secure Saturday’s protests.
