Kenya cuts thermal power usage to avert steep electricity prices

Kenya has reduced thermal power usage on the national grid to avoid burdening consumers with high electricity bills. In the six months ending June 2026, Kenya Power tapped 646.46 million kWh of thermal power, accounting for 8.1% of the total, down from 10% the previous year. Despite this reduction, electricity prices slightly rose due to increases in the fuel surcharge and forex adjustment.
