Kenya: Dangote launches a $16 billion mega refinery project

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote laid the foundation stone for a $16 billion refinery in Lamu, Kenya, with a capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, surpassing all existing European refineries. The project includes a 1,000-megawatt power plant, half of which will supply Kenya's grid, with initial crude oil imports from outside Africa due to local production limits. The ceremony was attended by Kenyan President William Ruto, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. The project marks a significant step in African industrialization but raises environmental concerns.
