Kenya electricity imports rise further to avert rationing

Kenya's reliance on electricity imports increased in the six months to June 2026, reaching 12% of total supplies, mainly due to hydropower inflows from Ethiopia. Kenya Power received 7.88 million kilowatt-hours from Ethiopia, accounting for 10.3% of total supplies, while imports from Uganda rose slightly to 158,390 kWh. The available reserve capacity has shrunk to less than 3.3%, heightening the risk of electricity outages.
