Kenya Joins 9 Countries to Tackle Indian Ocean Pollution

Kenya is among 10 countries that adopted 15 decisions to combat ocean pollution, protect marine life, and improve management of the western Indian Ocean. These decisions were made during a four-day meeting in Dar es Salaam, marking 40 years of the Nairobi Convention, a regional agreement for coastal and ocean protection. Key issues discussed included plastic pollution, preparedness for major marine pollution incidents from land-based activities, and the conservation of mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs. The countries also discussed international cooperation through the High Seas Treaty and a recent US-Kenya agreement to enhance maritime security and regional stability.
